In Indonesia, our commitment to invest over $5 billion dollars into cloud data centers brings with it our commitment to digital skills, sustainability and community welfare, creating a ripple effect across the local economy.

Since the launch of our AWS Region in Jakarta in 2021, we have introduced a range of community programs focused on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, local skills development, sustainability, and hyperlocal social impact.

In collaboration with Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI), we recently launched a new STEAM Capacity Building: Exploring AI & ML program, bringing hands-on, artificial intelligence (AI) foundational training to 40 teachers from 40 West Java schools. Through PJI's structured curriculum and Code.org’s App Labs, these educators will experiment and create their own AI and machine learning (ML) projects. Code.org, a leading non-profit dedicated to making computer science education accessible to all children, provides the foundation for this initiative. Once trained, these teachers will integrate AI and ML into their classroom curricula, reaching over 2,400 students with innovative technology education.

"We appreciate AWS’s ongoing contribution to Indonesia since the launch of its first data center investment in 2021. As Indonesia accelerates its digital transformation, strong collaboration between the government and technology partners like AWS is essential to developing a future-ready workforce. This collaboration between AWS and KOMDIGI plays a crucial role in advancing education, skills development, and sustainability efforts, equipping Indonesians with the digital competencies needed to thrive in the evolving economy. Programs like Terampil di Awan and the Think Big Space directly support our national agenda to strengthen digital literacy, prepare Indonesia’s workforce for the future, and promote sustainable digital growth. We look forward to continued collaboration in fostering Indonesia’s digital talent and ecosystem,” said Meutya Viada Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs for Indonesia.

Students of STEAM

Fostering Innovation Through STEAM Education

Education is the cornerstone of progress, and AWS is at the forefront of bringing cutting-edge STEAM education to Indonesian students. Our flagship program, the Think Big Space, launched in October 2024, marked a significant milestone as the first-of-its-kind in the ASEAN region.

The Think Big Space serves as a STEAM Learning Hub, providing students and educators with hands-on technical education and cloud computing training. This innovative space is expected to benefit approximately 4,000 students and community members annually, offering free access to AWS Skill Builder and hosting various educational programs.

Women taking part in a Girls' Tech Day

Our annual Girls' Tech Day continues to bridge the gender gap in technology. In 2024, we welcomed over 300 young women from six high schools in West Java, inspiring the next generation of female innovators to explore careers in tech. The event featured talks from women tech leaders and interactive coding tournaments, igniting passion for technology among young women. To date we have engaged over 900 female students on technological empowerment through Girl’s Tech Day in West Java.

Bridging the Skills Gap with Local Development Programs

Recognizing the importance of digital skills in today's job market, AWS has initiated numerous skills training programs, including in collaboration with the government local organizations in Indonesia. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 800,000 people in Indonesia with cloud skills.

  • Terampil di Awan (TdA) is a strategic cloud skilling program by AWS for students, educators and underserved groups across 26 provinces in Indonesia, and last year, we have expanded the program to communities in West Java. We conducted Introduction to Cloud Computing and Web Static Development training, reaching over 11,000 students, the Cloud Practitioner Essentials advanced learning program for over 200 teachers to date.
  • We collaborated with Alkademi and Jabar Digital Services to launch the Jabar Digital Academy (JDA) in 2024. JDA offers two main tracks, Full Stack Programming and Digital Marketing, which has already benefited over 5,000 Indonesians, including over 1,400 women and 10 participants with disabilities. In 2025, we will continue JDA with generative AI learning tracks in Programming and Digital Marketing to empower many more across West Java.
  • In collaboration with the Orbit Future Academy we have launched our Digital Upskilling & Job Readiness Program in 2024, we have enrolled 1,500 students across 13 universities in West Java. This program uses a unique five-star progression system to develop digital skills and prepare students for future jobs.

Promoting Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship

Water tanks being installed in Indonesia by AWS

AWS is investing in water replenishment projects to expand community water access, availability, and quality by restoring watersheds, and by bringing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to water-stressed communities.

In 2024, we expanded our work with Habitat for Humanity on water sustainability, specifically in West Java. The project aims to improve water access through household connections and water treatments facilities across four villages.

To date, we have constructed nine clean water facilities and installed hundreds of water connections across these villages, benefiting 1,394 households. We aim to return and estimated 200 million liters of water annually to these communities through this AWS Water Positive Project.

In collaboration with the Greeneration Foundation, our Eco Ranger 2.0 has made strides in the Pantai Mekar Village. The initiative has successfully planted over 3,500 mangrove seeds and built two waste management facilities to process plastic and organic waste. The program’s impact extends beyond physical infrastructure, as it has engaged thousands of community members through online training and hands-on activities, including waste collection, environmental clean-up, and mangrove planting. This strong community participation demonstrates how local involvement can drive meaningful conservation efforts.

Driving hyperlocal social impact programs for the long-term

At AWS, we believe in addressing the unique needs of local communities for the long-term. Our hyperlocal social impact initiatives include food and groceries donations, school library renovations, and dental health campaigns for students.

As we continue to invest in Indonesia's communities, we remain committed to our vision of technology as a force for good. By focusing on education, skills development, sustainability, and local impact, we're not just preparing Indonesia for a digital future – we're helping to shape that future in a way that benefits everyone.
