Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, announces that six institutes of higher learning in Singapore—including all five national polytechnics and a private university—will standardize on AWS cloud computing technologies and methodologies as the curriculum for their mainstream technology courses and diploma programs to educate and develop the next generation of cloud professionals. The three-year course curriculum will include, the fundamentals of cloud computing and instruction in the core services of AWS in the first year, using AWS for application development including how to build reliable and secure application architecture in the second year, and an opportunity to participate in a real-world technology internship and project implementation using AWS’s advanced tools and services in the final year. The courses will be available in January 2021 as part of the polytechnics’ and private university’s diploma and short course programs.
The six institutes of higher learning that are integrating content from AWS programs are Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Republic Polytechnic (RP), Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Temasek Polytechnic (TP), and the London School of Business and Finance (LSBF). AWS education programs provide students and educators with resources and content that focus on building cloud skills and preparing students for new opportunities in the workforce.
According to LinkedIn[1], employees with cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and scientific computing expertise are among the top skills that companies need most in 2020. With the growing need for skilled technical talent, the six institutes of higher learning will align their academic programs with entry-level job requirements in these technology domains, ensuring graduates are skilled at building, deploying, and managing web and mobile applications securely on AWS, in order to help prepare students for in-demand technology-related careers. Students will also gain practical hands-on experience in developing artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) applications and security-related solutions that will build their competence with various AWS services, the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform.
“Developing a skilled tech workforce experienced in cloud computing is key to growing Singapore’s economy,” said Tan Lee Chew, ASEAN managing director, worldwide public sector, AWS. “We are pleased to work with these six institutions to launch an AWS-based cloud curriculum that will help educate students for in-demand technology careers. With the resources and tools provided by AWS, the educators and students can gain access to the latest and most innovative cloud technologies to help build a skilled future workforce.”
All participating students will be given AWS promotional credits to gain real-world, hands-on experience using AWS services. The students will also participate in Build On 2021, an annual hackathon hosted by AWS that invites students from vocational institutions, polytechnics, and universities to solve business challenges by developing solutions using cloud services. This event also provides opportunities for students to network with AWS Partners and customers as they seek employment opportunities, including full-time roles or internships.
